Working While Living in Wimberley, Texas: Jobs, Remote Work, and Commute Reality

• By Chris Pesek

Living in Wimberley works best for people who either work remotely, own a business, are semi-retired, or are comfortable commuting to nearby job centers. Wimberley has local jobs, but it is not a deep employment market like Austin, San Marcos, Kyle, or the I-35 corridor. That is the tradeoff.

For daily work, most buyers need to think in three buckets. First, local work in Wimberley, which is usually tied to schools, healthcare, trades, hospitality, small business, real estate, tourism, and local services. Second, nearby employment in San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Dripping Springs, and New Braunfels. Third, Austin-based work, which can make sense if you are hybrid or only commuting a few days per week. Wimberley is about 15 miles by road from San Marcos and about 38 miles by road from Austin, but commute time depends heavily on route, weather, traffic, and where your office is located.

The mistake is assuming “near Austin” means an easy daily commute. From Wimberley, you are usually working with RR 12, Highway 290, San Marcos access, or I-35 depending on where you are headed. Visit Wimberley’s own directions point people through San Marcos/I-35 or through Dripping Springs and Highway 290, which tells you how important route planning really is.

Wimberley can be a great fit if you want Hill Country lifestyle first and your work situation supports it. Just be honest about the commute before buying the house, not after.
